At the Inter-School Sports,
run on the Drapers' Ground, Leyton, the School slightly improved on last year's
performance. In the first event, the High Jump, our representative failed
at 4ft. l0ins., and was unplaced. The event was won by Romford, who cleared
5ft. lin. In the 300 Yards under 13, Pearce ran extremely well against boys who
looked much bigger. He secured the second place, and as the winner's time was
39 3-5th seconds, this was a very creditable performance. The next event, the
400 Yards under 17, yielded us three points, thanks to the excellent running of
Roberts. This again was a very fast race, being won in 59.5 seconds. We had no
man placed in the 100 Yards under 15, which was won easily by Ilford in 11.6
seconds. In the Long Jump, Vaughan and V. Snaith were unplaced, and the event
was won by the Abbey School with a leap of 17ft. 11.5in. We experienced rather
bad luck in the 440 Yards under 15. White, second at the bend before the
straight, was too spent to finish well, and was beaten out of a place. The
event was run in the fast time of 60 3-5th seconds. We had hopes of winning the
880 Yds under 17, but an Ilford man ran right away from his field and won in 2
min. 16 4-5th seconds. Vincent ran well to finish third. Pearce again
distinguished himself in the 100 Yards under 13, and finished second. The
winner returned the splendid time of 12 1-10th seconds. In the Relay,
Harvey (our under 14 representative) could only run sixth, and although White
(under 15) started well, he could not make much impression on the start of the
leaders. When Vaughan (under 16) received the baton, he immediately passed one
man and came close up to another. Roberts (under 17) ran very well and passed
into 4th place within 30 yards of home. These three points just gained us
fourth place in the whole sports. The final positions were: Ilford, 46
2-3rd points. Leytonstone, 37 points. Romford, 30 points. Monoux, 18 points.
Abbey School, 17 points. East Ham, 15 1-3rd points. Wanstead, unplaced.
Roberts, C.W. Vincent, and Pearce are to be congratulated on their splendid
efforts, and all other competitors may reflect that, if they were unsuccessful
in gaining places, they were honoured in being chosen to represent their
School. L.W. SNAITH (Vlth), Sports Captain. |
