A record entry, the
unusually close competition for the "Victor Ludorum" Cup, and the all-important
question of which House would win the Shield, combined to give this year's
Sports a fair measure of success, in spite of the counter attraction of the
Boat Race, and the really splendid example of orthodox April weather to which
we were treated. The destination of the Shield was quickly decided, for
Higham, fortunate in having won both the cross-country races, and in having
good runners who were not forced to overwork themselves, won the first seven
events and made their position safe. In contrast, it was not until the last
race (the half-mile) that the winner of the "Victor Ludorum" was found. C.
White, of Morris, just won this event from H. Singleton and Cecil Vincent, and
thereby made the chief cup his, W.L.Roberts (Higham) being three points behind.
White is to be congratulated on a very excellent performance. The Old Boys'
Cup for the mile was won by Cecil Vincent (Higham), who, following in the
footsteps of his brother, Charles W., has kept the cup in the family. The Lady
Leucha Warner Cup for the half-mile went to C. White, and the Ladies' Cup for
the quarter-mile to W. L. Roberts. Among the juniors, the performance of E.
Jones (Higham) was outstanding, whilst H.A.Pearce (Allpass), F.H.C.Bird
(Morris) and G.A.G.Harvey (Higham) deserve special mention. The Old Boys
races were up to the usual standard, although entries were fewer than last
year. R.E.Warboys, in particular, deserves commendation for his winning of the
mile. The invitation relay race was well run by the Coopers' Company's
School, who won from Leyton County and East Ham in a close finish. At the
close of the day Miss M.Norris, Headmistress of the Girls' High School, very
graciously distributed the prizes, and amid great enthusiasm presented to
S.B.Smith, Captain of Higham, the Shield which his House had won for the second
year in succession. W_ L, RosErzrs (VI. Lit.). , Both cross-country
races were run at Chingford on March 19th, the senior over a course which
included Yardley Hill, and both were won by Higham, the first home being:
senior, C.White (Morris); junior, E.Jones (Higham). It is to be hoped that in
future for the purposes of the "Victor Ludorum," the senior cross-country be
counted as a class I. event. At present, although for the House the
cross-country gains more points than any other event, for the individual this
most gruelling of races goes for nought.
