Local Hospital Fete
Under the supervision of J.H.Payling, a party of Sixth-formers had charge of a
"Hoop-la" stall at the local Fete, held on July 1st, 2nd, and 3rd, at
Snaresbrook. Our intellectuals threw off their cloak of erudition for a time
and became quite frivolous. One prefect indulged in oratory of a much more
boisterous nature than that usually associated with the calling he hopes to
embrace, and turned hardened professionals green with envy. Another
prefect, to whom commercial instincts are usually attributed, was, until rapped
on the knuckles by a more experienced showman, seen handing out prizes to
competitors, fair and otherwise, for no apparent reason whatever. Nevertheless,
the School managed to collect about £10, and received a letter of thanks
from Major Baker, the organiser.
Oedipus at Colonus. On July 12th, the
more classically minded members of the School, led by Messrs. Reaney, Whitt,
and Watson, visited the New Scala Theatre, to see the Oedipus at Colonus of
Sophocles. The high temperature, however, somewhat cooled our ardour for the
Classics.
Iphigenia in Tauris. A number of
Monovians were able, nevertheless, to patronise the Classics with a greater
degree of comfort, when, on October 8th, they saw the Iphigenia in Tauris of
Euripides, played by the senior girls at the High School. We have frequently
observed that environment has a marked effect on appreciation of Greek
plays.
VISIT TO THE BRITISH MUSEUM Members
of the lower forms accompanied Mr. West and Mr. Watson to the British Museum on
July 22nd, and had an enjoyable and instructive time.
THE "MELODIANS' The Upper Fifth Forms
sprang a pleasant surprise on the School by giving a Concert on July 23rd.
G.H.Taylor, in particular, scored a great success with his musical history of
an egg; Stone and Campfield, handling our venerable piano with befitting
delicacy, provided classics, jazz, and a mixture of the two; Foan fiddled;
Collins and James sang duets; List (an old boy) trumpeted; Askey warbled; and,
to close a very enjoyable evening, the Headmaster sang three songs, two in
English and one in German, which were enthusiastically applauded. E.Askey and
L.Campfield, the organisers, deserve our thanks for the pleasant time they gave
us.
VISIT TO THE "OLD VIC." Messrs.
Rothery and Whitt took a party from the middle school to see Shakespeare's
"Henry Vth" on October 28th. The play, which is being read in the Fourth Forms,
was much appreciated, and would have been all the more enjoyed had the seats
provided greater comfort.
RE-ARRANGEMENT OF FORMS. There has
been some re-arrangement of forms this term. The Literary and Scientific Sixths
are now separate, the former under Mr. Ellis, and the latter under Mr. Emery.
Mr. Morgan now supervises Lower VB. In the lower school there is now only one
First Form, under Mr. Belchambers, and a new form, IIc, is under Mr.
Watson.
SPORTS COMMITTEE MEETINGS. Sports
Committee Meetings were held on September 17th and October 22nd. The first
elected S.B.Smith and W.L.Roherts as Captain and Vice-captain respectively,
chose J.H.Payling as Sports Secretary in succession to Smith, and made
arrangements for the season's football. The second discussed House
matters.
FOOTBALL COI.OLRS. No longer will new
boys proudly array themselves in jerseys of red and black stripes, for, from
now on, all new jerseys must be in House colours. School colours will be worn
only by the School Elevens, who will be garbed in shirts of red and black
quarters.
