Golf

John Smiles, club secretary provides the following information about the Golf Club.
Three dates have been booked for next season at golf courses selected by our new Captain, Derek Southgate. We will all wish him a successful season.
We should all say a thank you to Rod Hancock for the venues this past summer, we were blessed with good quality and reasonable weather.
To recall, we played at Crondon Park in June, Chigwell in July and Abridge in September. All in all the attendances were pretty good, although those who missed Abridge for various reasons are unfortunate, since the course was in brilliant condition, in spite of the drought.
At Crondon Park the winner of the Spring Cup was Derek Southgate and in second place was Bob Merrilees.
The winner of the Summer Cup at Chigwell was Rod Hancock with Richard Danzey in second place.
Martin Spanton won the Autumn Trophy at Abridge with 39 points, Norman Jackson came second place with 36 points.
Congratulations to all those named, but be prepared for strong challenges in 2004.
The bookings for 2004 are as follows:
Monday, 2lst June, 2004 Bishops Stortford G.C
Thursday, l5th July, 2004 Chelmsford G.C.
Wednesday, 25th August, 2004 Abridge G.C.

The Society at present is composed of mainly fifty and sixty year olds, and it would be nice to recruit some younger O.M.'s.

The Australian Old Monovian Annual Dinner was held successfully on 15 February 2003 at the home of Howard (1946-52) & Margaret Levin in Melbourne. This very convivial occasion was marked by the number of OMs attending for the first time. Roger (1946-50) & Betty Woolley travelled from Perth to participate. Roger's formerly red hair now being a shining white, he recalled many of his escapades of fifty or more years ago, including his high speed bicycle rides to chase buses in Chingford Road. Tony (1958-65) & Louise Turner, having narrowly missed attending in two previous years, journeyed from Canberra to join us this year, bringing a copy of the School photograph of 1961 and a photo album of current School facilities prepared by old OM friends whose son is currently at Monoux.

Paul (1967-70) & Megan Logsdon, who live in Melbourne, made contact through www.friendsreunited.co.uk and were delighted to be at this dinner. Both Paul, who finished his secondary education at King Edward VIth, Chelmsford, and Megan, are architects. Paul was pleased to have his memories of Monoux revived by the contact with others at the evening. These were Howard & Margaret Levin, John Ferguson (1968-74) & Ted Boak (1952-57). John has promised to produce a CD recording of the accompaniment to the School Song in order to rectify the rather tuneless rendition which we produced! As usual the conversation ranged far and wide, and continued long, with many past members of staff being recalled with mixed feelings. There were also fond remembrances of food-related items, the Tuck Shop under the stair at the south side of the School and Table Monitors of note from School lunches.

Both Reg Chasney (1935-39) & John Kerr-Stevens (1960-65) had indicated that they would be at the dinner but had to withdraw reluctantly, Reg due to Bush Fire pressures preventing him and Nell finding people to mind their horses and look after the business, and John as a result of slowly recovering health which precluded him and Cathie from travelling.

Numbers of apologies were receive from both overseas and Australia: Frank Collins (46-50), Ted Cocksedge (35-40), John Beaney (53-60), Stan Piper (45-49), Steve Dinsdale (59-65), Mike Munns (37-42), Bill Brown (46-51), Robin Sen (49-57), Derek Harris (41-49), Roger Bell (54-59), Andy Hearn (82-86).

The Dinner for 2004 will be held on 14 February at the home of Bill & Brenda Brown in Brisbane, please put the date in your diary for next year, more details later in the year. Also long range information for 2005 - the Dinner will be in Canberra at Tony & Louise Turner's home.

Kind regards, Howard Levin
Sadly since the above memo was written Howard has passed away. He will be sorely missed by all in Australia, and fondly remembered by his friends in the UK.
Howard's legacy of the regular OM reunion dinners will be maintained, the next being as indicated above in Brisbane, hosted by Bill & Brenda Brown.
